Shunt Duct for Ventilation of Chute Lobby Areas
According to Building Regulations (Waste Chutes and Storage) a room containing a waste chute shall be accessed from the open air or from a protected lobby which has not less than 0.2 metres2 of permanent ventilation
The Shunt Duct Ventilation System consists of a main flue with subsidiary flues connecting each floor. It has been designed so that fresh air can be drawn in from outside whilst extracting smoke and fumes from any floor of the building without contaminating any other floor. The Shunt duct is a powered system that could, if required, be wired to smoke detectors so that smoke will automatically be drawn out and fresh air drawn in. The system will not allow the smoke to penetrate to other floors through the ventilation system. The air flow in this system is powered by a 250mm slim cased in-line fan that has an air flow of 960 m3 / hour at 1400 rpm and is powered by a 40 watt single phase motor. (See attached drawing for direction of airflow)
This system has been installed in both student accommodation and luxury apartment blocks.
